Happy Birthday iPod Nano!

I bought my very first iPod in 2007 to replace my CD player. It was a silver third generation iPod nano that I named “Spicy Marmalade” after a song from the Gravitation anime OST. I started a trend of sorts after a classmate fell in love with my nano and bought her own (in black, of course).

Because I’m so sentimental, I found the entry in my old notebook where I bought the Spicy Marmalade (complete with a copy of the original Best Buy receipt and the iTunes card I bought that day). It’s probably the first “tech review” I ever wrote, so excuse the horribleness.

Here’s the full text:

After much waiting, research, and indecision, I finally bought my first MP3 player—the new 4 GB iPod nano.

I know, I know. I talked junk about iPods for a long time and I try not to follow the herd, but I got one for three reasons: 1) It seems to be the most reliable of all the players I’ve seen lately and it’s compatible with Vista, 2) I had already bought a bunch of songs from iTunes and was basically stuck with it, and 3) I fell in love with the adorable “fatty” nano.

Was it worth $150? I’ve had it for a week and overall I’m a satisfied customer. I was initially shocked by how small it is. I mean, I knew it was small, but damn! Nevertheless, the screen pops when you turn it on. It took me awhile to get used to the scroll wheel button (and I still haven’t mastered it). I like how you can start it up right where you left off at when you turn it on.

The organization system is cool. I can listen to my music by a variety of categories, or make up one on the spot. I can also watch movies, listen to podcasts or play games. I can use it for a USB flash drive too, which is cool.

The headphones are way better than I expected them to be. Good bass.

Overall I love it, but I do have some issues. My biggest issue isn’t exactly an issue, just a problem. I’m really afraid of carrying it. I’m constantly worried about losing it or dropping it or scratching it or getting robbed. I’m going to get a case to protect it, but there’s no avoiding the latter.

Secondly, the sound could be better. It has bass boost, but if I turn it on, the sound will distort. Regularly the sound is good, but you can never have too much bass. The headphones bug me because they won’t stay in my ears.

Overall, though, I’m very happy with my purchase. I would probably buy it again. Hopefully, it’ll last awhile and do me proud. Fingers Crossed

The iPod nano has indeed done me proud over the past 12 years. Other than a small crack in the paint near the clickwheel, it still works perfectly. My mom, the nano’s current owner, absolutely loves it.

So, Happy Birthday Spicy Marmalade!
