The Art of Notebook Decorating Preview: How to Make an Envelope Pocket

I’m in the midst of writing a post about how I decorate my notebooks. So far, I have nine drafts and around 2450 words. I never realized how complicated my decorating process is.

To streamline the post, I cut a few inessential sections. One technique I recently discovered, however, was too good not to share anyway: how to make a pocket from an envelope. Enjoy!

Supply List

To make this pocket, you’re going to need the following supplies:

  • Composition notebook
  • Envelopes
  • Invisible tape (aka Scotch tape)
  • Gluestick
  • Scissors

Envelope Pocket Instructions

Now that you have your supplies, let’s get started on that pocket.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Peel apart the folds on the envelope’s back until the envelope is nothing but a diamond-shaped piece of paper.
  2. Cut off the envelope’s bottom, left, and right flaps along the fold lines.
  3. Trim off about an inch from the envelope’s left and right sides (including the sides of the top flap).
  4. Position the envelope on your notebook’s inside cover so that there’s about an inch of space around the sides and the bottom.
  5. Apply glue to the white side of the envelope’s top flap.
  6. Glue the top flap to the inside cover white side down and pointy end up.
  7. Put strips of tape over the adhesive edges on the top flap–you know, where you would usually lick the envelope to seal it.
  8. Flip the envelope’s body up so that the white side is showing again.
  9. Tape the envelope’s sides and bottom with strips of invisible tape.
  10. Cut a slit across the tape on the top corners to fully open up the pocket.

Conclusion

Honestly, making a pocket from an envelope isn’t much easier than making one my usual way. The typical mailing envelope isn’t as sturdy as I’d like either. But it’s convenient if you need to make a pocket and you don’t have any sturdy paper on hand. Everybody’s got envelopes.

Stay tuned for my full notebook decorating post soon!
